CHARITY BASED 'NOT-FOR-PROFIT' CHOIR

We are looking for a new Musical Director for our Autumn term, September 2018.

The Uckfield Singers will soon be saying a fond goodbye to their highly talented Musical Director, Tina Gelnere.  Tina will be spending the next two years studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on their two-year Masters Opera course and her last performance as MD with the Singers will be at their summer concert on 21 July 2018 at Uckfield Civic Centre. Nick Poole, Chairman of the Uckfield Singers commented: “We are delighted Tina now has this fantastic opportunity, one which her talent richly deserves. Both the Singers and Tina have benefited from our association and she leaves with all our best wishes. Of course this means we are now looking for a new musical director to take the choir forward.

Our community choir started in 2007 - we are a large not-for-profit choir, our members comprise all ages and abilities who love to sing and at the same time raise money for local & national charities. We sing everything from Les Miserables to Abba, Elton John to Rogers & Hammerstein and everything inbetween. Our rehearsals are fun in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.  We hold two concerts a year, also occasionally attending events and workshops.

On Saturday 9th December, the Uckfield Singers gave their 11th annual Christmas Concert in the Civic Centre. They welcomed the Buxted Symphony Orchestra as guests.

Playing to a full house, the Orchestra started the programme with a Rossini Overture, followed by the Singers’ “A Flower Remembered” by John Rutter. The evening progressed with our usual eclectic mix of songs and carols old and new, interspersed with Orchestral pieces. The audience joined in enthusiastically with the carols, led by the Singers and accompanied by the Orchestra.

At the end of the concert, a giant cheque for £375.00 was presented to Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service from the proceeds of the raffle.

Our musical directors were Tina Gelnere for the Singers, who also sang the solo part in Panis Angelicus, Julian Broughton for the Orchestra and audience, the Orchestra Leader was Lisa Wigmore, and the pianist for the Singers was Kim Retallick, with additional keyboard accompaniment by Daniel Card.

Once again, many thanks go to C.P.J Field (inc. Cooper & Sons and Fuller & Scott) for sponsoring the cost of the programmes, Gale and Woolgar for ticket sales, and to Quarry Printing for once again producing excellent flyers and programmes.

We sponsored and decorated a tree in the 2017 Holy Cross Festival of Christmas Trees.

On 16th  September, a small group from the choir sang at the Volunteer Bureau’s “Celebrate” Event at the Civic Centre. Thanks to Ron Hill for the photos.

In July 2017, Sue Daniels stepped down as Chairman after 8 years. Sue is a founder member of the choir, and has served 10 years on committee. She was presented with a specially commisioned bowl, a card made by Quinta Dean and signed by all the choir members,  and vouchers. Choir member Erika Pratt had made a special ‘S’ cake of chocolate brownies, eclairs and strawberries, enjoyed by everyone. She has been made Honorary President in recognition of her hard work and dedication to the choir.

Nick Poole takes over as Chariman.
